A Message from the Artistic Director

In June of 2009, I graduated from York University in Toronto, Canada with a BFA in Theatre Design and Production. After moving back to Los Angeles for the first time in four years, I was in shock at how different the theatre scene is on the west coast than what I have grown used to in Toronto and New York City. When I arrived in Los Angeles, I went to see a local production of one of my favorite musicals that was playing to sold out audiences, and RAVE reviews.

After sitting through Act One, I was really disappointed in the caliber of show that was being presented to me. As a designer, I was disappointed at the merely second-rate scenic design, and the absolute mess that the production called lighting. Beyond that, I felt that the choreography and vocals were purely mediocre, and the acting and direction were so under-par, that I felt the director fully missed the point of the piece.

I have always considered producing my own show, but seeing this production gave me the incentive to start my company. When trying to decide how to start, and what I wanted my company to stand for, I put myself in the shoes of every member involved. I knew that I did not want to create a company for established LA actors to be involved in, and knew that I wanted to allow recent theatre school graduates to be involved in a company that can allow them to work professionally, while forging bonds with other theatre people who were in similar situations. BreakThru Theatre was born.

BreakThru Theatre (BTT) is a new theatre company that is composed of young professionals working together to produce noteworthy plays in the Los Angeles area.

Our Mandate states:Break-Thru Theatre is devoted to producing new interpretations of classical and contemporary plays and musicals, while providing an opportunity for emerging artists to showcase their theatrical talents in an intimate venue.

This company, and our inaugural production of Kiss of the Spiderwoman has been a HUGE undertaking, but the show is truly shaping up to be something that the entire production team can be proud of. I am sincerely blessed to be working with such talented people, who excude the professionalism that I expect, and have the talent to back it up.

Thank you for your donations, your support, and your words of confidence, and I look forward to seeing everyone at the show.

Sincerely,

David Goldstein
